What if I need cleaning inside of my home or business? 2017-09-04T14:57:00+00:00

What if I need cleaning inside of my home or business?

Though we clean the targeted areas of the roof and grounds with every pigeon control job we do, sometimes the pigeon mess may have found it’s way inside of a building or structure. This can be a big problem if there’s been a roof leak or if the pigeons found a way to nest/roost inside.

For commercial properties we highly recommend Genesis Commercial Services. For residential properties we do not have a referral at this time.

Does Goldshot do termite control?

We do not do termite control. There are so many dishonest termite companies out there and it took us years to find a couple of great companies to refer for our customers when they are dealing with termite problems. Here are our recommendations:

Bernard’s Pest

We’re very confident that both of these local pest control companies will take very good care of you. For any other pest related problems you may be dealing with, we probably do it.

How does the olive tree spray work? 2017-02-17T09:18:05+00:00

How does the olive tree spray work?

We treat the olive trees with a plant growth regulator (PGR). The application is made annually and during the 1st quarter of the year. We first rinse and tarp off any desirable vegetation near the targeted tree(s). Then we mix the PGR with water and a surfactant (spreader/sticker) according to label specifications. The mixture is then applied uniformly on all of the leaves of each tree. The surfactant breaks the surface tension allowing the PGR/water mixture to adhere better to the leaves and buds.

There are a number of different hormones that are associated with the growth and development of olive trees. The PGR interferes with and changes the that hormonal balance. These changes inhibit the production of pollen which eliminates the production of fruit and is a major relief to allergy sufferers. After the application we remove the tarps and rinse the desirable vegetation again just to be sure.
Did you know we also provide weed control spraying?

Do I really need the pre emerge weed spraying service? 2017-01-08T10:30:19+00:00

Pre Emerge Weed Spraying Service

Yes – you should have the pre emerge weed spraying service done every 6 months. This service – if done correctly – prevents a weed problem from taking root in the first place. Pulling and Spraying Weeds as they pop up is a necessary evil to some extent. But why not be proactive and spend much less time on Weeds all year round? The pre emerge application kills any seeds in the top few inches of soil so they never get to germinate. That prevents them from becoming actual Weeds which prevents them from spreading more seeds into your landscaping. It all adds up to a Weed Prevention Program that works year round and a lot less Weeds. A nice side benefit is the reduction of allergens produced by Weeds as they produce pollen in your environment.

What attracts bats to my house? 2017-02-17T09:21:50+00:00

What Attracts Bats?

Whenever bats are out and about they are generally looking for food, water or shelter. Since they eat lots of bugs, their food can be found almost anywhere. A lot of flying insects congregate around outdoor lighting at night and that will draw hungry bats. There are some species of bats that feed on nectar and flowering agaves are a favorite source. Nectar feeding bats will also be attracted to a quick and easy meal from the hummingbird feeder on your back porch. For water, any pool, pond, lake or stream will work as long as there’s enough room for skimming the surface.

It can be a little unnerving when bats are flying around close by, but they generally aren’t a real problem. Unless they find suitable shelter at your home or business, that is. That’s when the real problem begins. What attracts bats besides food and water? A safe place to sleep and raise a family, just like all critters. A 1/16th of an inch bump under the eaves will work for hanging around. They can get into openings in your walls or attic as small as 3/8 of an inch. Anything dark and private will do. If they do set up house, professional bat proofing will be needed to remedy the situation.

How can I get rid of the wasps around the pool? 2017-02-17T09:58:24+00:00

Wasps Around The Pool Syndrome

It’s perfect tanning weather outside. Kinda hot, very sunny, an ever so slight breeze blowing. You have an iced cold glass of tea, your suntan lotion and some tunes and you’re ready for some down time. You park yourself by the pool and exhale. It’s not long before you realize the good ‘ol American past time of wasp around the pool syndrome. Why are they there and what do they want? Must they have stingers THAT big? How can I get rid of them, you ask?

Well, they re most likely just hanging around for the water. If there are flowers close by it would be the perfect situation for wasps. Bees will sometimes hang around the pool for the water too, tho wasps are more common. The good news is that they aren’t there to harass you. You’re just in their way. Unfortunately, your options for relief are limited. Here is the short list of what you can do to help limit a problem with wasps around the pool:

Remedies for Wasps Hanging Around The Pool:

  • Make sure that the water is in the pool and not everywhere else. Water that pools up on the cool deck or in the lawn or garden is more accessible and a big draw for wasps.
  • Keep flowering plants away from the pool area. If there is pollen close by wasps have two reasons to hang around.
  • Try to keep sugary food sources such as sodas, candy, fruit or hummingbird feeders away from the pool area.
  • Wear a red bathing suit. Wasps are attracted to the colors white and yellow, but cannot see red.
  • Avoid the use of aftershave, cologne or perfume if you know you’ll be outside.
  • Plant mint around your pool area. It is believed that wasps do not like mint. Put a fresh sprig in your tea, too!
  • The use of a water agitator make help as it makes it difficult for wasps to get to the surface.
  • There are some commercial wasp traps that can be used, but they must be used correctly to be effective. We recommend a professional exterminator for this task.
  • Wasps also don’t like eucalyptus oil, so try using an oil diffuser close to where you’re hanging out.
  • One of the most important steps to limit wasps around the pool syndrome is to remove any nearby wasps nests. If they are nesting close by you will absolutely have to interact with them. We recommend a professional exterminator for wasp nest removal and control.
  • Of course, there are insect repellent sprays available, tho we prefer not to use them.

The last thing you want to do is to start swatting at wasps when they buzz you. They can not only become aggressive but can bring friends to the fight, too. And, uh, THEY STING! The best thing to do if nothing else works is to calmly just walk away. And call Goldshot Exterminating!

Bees can be a pain when you’re trying to swim, too! Call Goldshot Exterminating if you need help with bees around the pool.

Are black widow spiders really dangerous? 2017-02-28T11:58:11+00:00

Are Black Widow Spiders Really Dangerous?

Pest Control Services

For effective Pest Control Services, including treatment for Black Widow Spiders, call Goldshot Exterminating.

Yes – they absolutely are! Although the male and immature black widow spiders are harmless, the female is the most venomous spider in North America. Her venom is up to 15 times as toxic as some rattlesnakes! Once she reaches adulthood there’s no mistaking her for any other species of spider. Her body is jet black and her webbing is irregular and extremely sticky. And her egg sacks look like white, roundish little cocoons. But its the striking red hourglass on her almost perfectly round abdomen that really catches our attention. It’s a feature that it unique to female black widow spiders.

Their lifespan is 1 – 3 years and they thrive in the Phoenix area. She secures her egg sacks with her sticky webbing, usually in dark, out of the way places. Each egg sack contains about 750 babies. They are distributed by the wind on their first strand of webbing. As a result, they can show up just about anywhere. A regular, thorough pest control service will keep them under control. The home owner should always teach their children not to touch the spiders or their webbing. I tell my customers to knock the old webs down with a stick a few days after treatment. If they come back we know there’s still at least one spider hiding in there. Of course, we guarantee our work and go back for a respray when that happens. Any reputable pest control company will do the same for spiders.

Extra tip: immature black widow spiders are sometimes referred to as brown widows. They don’t turn black until their last molt into adulthood and are a cream or light brown until then. Though smaller when immature, they do still have the same basic shape and make the same sticky webs.

Do I need honeycomb removal after my bee hive is eliminated? 2017-02-17T09:57:49+00:00

Do I Need Honeycomb Removal?

Maybe. Once a bee hive has become established, the bees focus most of their energy on producing honey and honeycomb. They create the perfect environment within the hive by regulating the temperature and humidity largely with the flapping of their wings. Once the bees have been eliminated, the honey will melt. If there is a large amount of honey (if the honeycomb is bigger than a football) or if the honey is located in a sensitive area such as around electrical components, then you should consider honeycomb removal. We never know until we have finished with the bee elimination process and can advise you at that time.

Bee control doesn’t have to be real expensive. Call around to get quotes and then do your research on any beet control companies you may be considering. Why do I get Bees in the same place again every year? 2017-02-17T09:39:22+00:00

Bees In The Same Place Again?

It’s fairly common for folks to have a re-infestation of bees in the same place again. Any reputable bee control service should guarantee their work for at least 30 days so if it happens within that time frame call the company who did the work back out. Bee control isn’t an exact science, so it does happen – even to the best of us. If the location was treated with the correct products you shouldn’t see a re-infestation during the same season, though that’s not absolutely written in stone. But if it’s been 60 days or more don’t blame your bee control company. It’s just mother nature doing what mother nature does best.

How Bees Communicate

Bees produce something called pheromones which help them communicate and function as a community. There are a variety of different pheromones which help the bees communicate about a variety of different things. Some pheromones help them find food or water. Some tell them when it’s time to defend their queen or their home. And some pheromones simply help them find their way back home. You can think of pheromones kind of similarly to a scent but only the bees can smell it. It will also draw other bees to that same location for years. If the original bees are not present to defend their home, the new bees may take up residence. So, even after the bee hive has been removed or eliminated the pheromone is still there attracting any new bees that travel close in the future.

When bee colonies out grow their available space, a new queen will be produced. She’ll take some workers and drones and head out to start her own bee colony. Since it is very common for the new queen bees from a given colony to use the same basic flight paths year after year, it is likely that you will have a new bee hive every year or so in that location. We have a bio-cleaner available that helps break the pheromone down. It helps but is not 100% effective. We highly recommend sealing the area off to guard against future infestations.

What is digging holes in my yard? 2017-02-17T09:41:03+00:00

What Is Digging Holes In My Yard?

Rabbits and Kangaroo Rats will dig out shallow divots in the ground to lay in. It can be common along the foundation of your home or next to out buildings on your property. You can also find that under bushes sometimes. However, they don’t dig very deep or do much actual damage to the landscaping. When folks ask “what is digging holes in my yard?”, it’s usually pocket gophers. There are also ground squirrels and the occasional mole that can do damage here in the valley, too.

Regardless of which critter it is, they can all make a mess of your yard. They’ll kill your plants, ruin your lawn and can nibble into underground water lines. And their holes can undermine the integrity of the ground beneath your ground-mounted A/C units, cement sidewalks, etc. We recently got a call from a lady who raises horses. Her most valuable stud stepped into a gopher hole and broke his leg, ending his career. As with most critters, the longer rodents are allowed to do their thing, the more of them there will be. That usually means more rodent damages, as well. In general terms, rodent problems should be taken care of ASAP, whether it’s an inside problem or an outside one.

Why are woodpeckers pecking on my house? 2017-02-17T09:58:38+00:00

Why Are Woodpeckers Pecking On My House?

There are a variety of reasons why a woodpecker would peck on your house. One of their favorite foods is termites and they will peck into the walls to get to them. Often they know the termites are there before the home owner does. We recommend getting a professional termite inspection if you’ve had ongoing woodpecker activity and/or damage. The inspection is not expensive and we have a couple of excellent termite companies we can refer you to if you need it. They also like the foam that is behind your stucco to use as a nesting material. Sometimes they just need to sharpen their beaks. And of course there’s the age old song of love: male woodpeckers like to make plenty of noise so the lady woodpeckers know he’s there.

Woodpeckers do not actually eat the wood or stucco that they are drumming on. They are simply removing it to get to whatever it is they are after. Studies show that about half of the time they will move on within a couple of weeks. The other half of the time they can wreak some havoc on your house – and fairly quickly. Regardless of why they’re pecking on your house, the damage woodpeckers cause is real and should be stopped as soon as possible. Since they are protected, professional woodpecker control is usually needed.

Can a pigeon problem cause a roof leak? 2017-02-17T09:45:36+00:00

Can A Pigeon Problem Cause A Roof Leak?

Yes – nothing poops like a pigeon! Their feces literally clogs up all of the drainage channels on the roof causing water to back up and go where it’s not supposed to go. Their feces is also very acidic and eats away at the tar paper and other roofing materials. We’ve have several roofing companies that have been referring their customers who have pigeon problems to us companies for years. Luckily, Goldshot Exterminating cleans the roof with every job we do!

Pigeon Poop Removal

Yes – cleaning the targeted areas of the roof is included with all of our installations. We can clean up the mess and keep the pigeons from coming back. Or, you can also hire us just to clean your roof.

  • Histoplasmosis
  • Candidiasis
  • Cryptococcosis
  • St. Louis Encephalitis

  • E.coli

Do I need to call my HOA before hiring Goldshot Exterminating to handle my pigeon control? 2017-02-17T09:57:29+00:00

HOA Approved Pigeon Control

No. We have literally tens of thousands of HOA approved pigeon control installations in virtually every neighborhood in the valley. We’ve never had a single HOA or BBB complaint on any of them. Certainly you can call them if you want, but our pigeon control products and services are so low visibility that you will not have a problem. In most cases we can have the work done sooner than you can get your HOA approval and they’ll probably never even know we’ve been there.

Why is it important that I address my pigeon problem as soon as possible? 2017-02-17T09:54:20+00:00

Structural Pigeon Problems

The answer is simple: structural pigeon problems cause millions of dollars in damages each year. Pigeons also harbor dozens of know diseases and parasites that can be harmful to you and your family. The longer they are on your roof the more damage they do to it and the more it costs to get rid of them. And since you’re breathing their poop all day every day, this is one time that sooner really is better.

Why are the pigeons on my house? 2017-02-17T09:57:05+00:00

Why Are The Pigeons On My House?

The 1st question customers with pigeon problems usually ask is ‘Why are the pigeons on my house?’ The answer is that there are many possible reasons. They’re a lot like other critters when it comes to needing food, water and shelter. The nooks & hidden areas up on the roof of many homes and buildings offer great shelters for pigeons to nest.  Pigeons have a pretty broad diet and find all of the food and water they need in our neighborhoods. Dog food, trash, grass seed and a host of other things offer the food they need. And the lush landscapes that we have offer all of the water they would ever need. You also have to take into account things like a lack of predators and shade.

Pigeons roost near their nest, often where they have a clear view of it. They like the high points in a neighborhood as it offers the advantage of seeing any predators from afar. Pigeons have a strong sense of community and will nest and roost close to each other. They basically have their own neighborhood in the roof tops of the homes in your neighborhood. Unfortunately it’s not always possible to remove conditions that are conducive to pigeon activity. The other pigeons and many of the food and water sources may be located on nearby properties where you have zero control. That leaves professional pigeon control as the best solution in most cases. The sooner you get pigeons off of your house, the less expensive it will generally be, both is damages and for the proofing.

I am waking up with tiny bites on my body. Do I have fleas or bed bugs? 2017-02-17T09:59:53+00:00

Waking Up With Tiny Bites?

The fleas we have in the Phoenix area are cat fleas. So, if you have cats you may possibly be waking up with tiny bites from fleas, but they don’t usually bite people. bed bugs are usually transported via a human carrier from some place recently visited like a motel or a friends house. We can do an inspection and even use monitoring stations to help us identify the critter. Often we find that you just have a tiny spider hiding under your bed and visiting you when you are asleep. We have a solution for that problem, too.

Do roaches really come up from the sewer? 2017-02-20T08:40:59+00:00

Do Roaches Really Come Up From The Sewer?

Yes – sometimes. The larger species of roaches such as the American, Oriental or Turkistanish Roaches are often referred to as sewer roaches. However, they are more likely to come from the outside. They like dark moist places such as the foundation of your home or a planter. They usually make their way inside under a door but can also come up through the sewer. All plumbing fixtures have a gooseneck in the pipe to hold water which blocks gases, fumes and bugs from coming up the empty pipes. One thing that a home owner can do to help is to run water down any drains that do not get used on a regular basis, keeping the gooseneck full. It’s a cheap, easy solution that will keep them from coming up if they are in the sewer lines. So next time you’re thinking ‘Do roached really come up from the sewer?’, turn all of your faucets on and count to 20. You’ll sleep better.

Why do I have roaches and/or ants in my house if I keep it clean? 2017-02-17T10:05:09+00:00

Why do I have bugs when I keep my house clean?

Obviously critters such as roaches and ants are looking for a food source. But what many folks don’t realize is that they are also looking for water. And roaches are so easily transported from one place to another that it is easy to bring them home with you. Ants often nest under the foundation of your home so you don’t even know they’re there until they’re marching across your kitchen counter. Sometimes ants and roaches, as well as some other critters, come up from the sewer line. A dirty home is not a prerequisite to having a roach or ant problem, so put the Pine-sol away and call Goldshot!

How does scorpion sealing help with scorpion control? 2017-02-17T10:08:55+00:00

How does a home seal help with scorpion control?

There are 43 known species of scorpions found in Maricopa County. Only one of these – the bark scorpion – is able to climb up a vertical surface. As a result, it is almost always the species that is found inside of homes and other structures. This species of Scorpion is most comfortable in dark, narrow spaces such as wall voids and crawl spaces. Every structure has gaps and crevices that allow access to the inside and to these void space areas of the building. So, how does scorpion sealing help with scorpion control? When a home seal is done correctly and with the correct products, most of these gaps and crevices are blocked or sealed off. That makes it much harder for scorpions to find their way into the structure.  Of course, this also applies to other critters such as spiders, crickets, etc.

A well done home seal helps keep scorpions out, but it also helps keep cold air in. The result is lower energy costs which means that it will eventually pay for itself. It will also lower the amount of dust that gets in to the home. An added bonus is a reduction in pesticide use inside of the home.

Is it true that pesticides do not kill scorpions? 2017-02-17T10:15:38+00:00

Is it true that pesticides don’t kill scorpions?

No. While some products definitely work better on scorpions than others, any pesticide will kill a scorpion with proper exposure. Controlling Arizona Bark Scorpions can be difficult and requires experience along with a thorough inspection and treatment. Another important element of sound scorpion control is educating the customer about eliminating any conditions that may be conducive to a scorpion problem. In addition to the proper scorpion treatment plan and great customer education and cooperation, sealing scorpions out of your home is also an important part of controlling a scorpion problem. Are pesticides safe for my children and pets?

No – but the careful and prudent use of pesticides is safe, provided that the correct products are used and that they are mixed and applied according to label specifications. Children and pets should never be allowed to come into contact with a pesticide application until dry, dissipated and/or aerated. Here’s the warning that we post on the invoice for every pest control service we do:

Is Goldshot Exterminating a member of the Better Business Bureau? 2017-02-17T10:28:39+00:00

Is Goldshot Exterminating A Member Of The Better Business Bureau?

Yes — we’re a member and an A+ BBB accredited pest control company. You can check out our Goldshot Exterminating Better Business Bureau profile here.

Does Better Business Bureau membership and ratings really matter?

We think so. The Better Business Bureau has been around for a very long time. Some business owners question whether or not a company’s paid membership skews or effects their BBB record. I can tell you from personal experience that it has little or no effect. Goldshot Exterminating has been a BBB member company since 2012 and the BBB has had a file on us since 2002. I see no difference in the way they handle us or our reputation. We pay for the membership strictly for our customers and potential customers benefit. Being an Accredited Better Business Bureau company means that we are subject the their code of ethics and dispute resolution policies. We would cancel if we thought they were unfair to us or if they did not provide a solid benefit to our customers.

BBB accreditation is by invitation only. The BBB says on their website that many firms are not eligible to join because they do not meet BBB standards for business performance. As a company, Goldshot Exterminating is built on a foundation of integrity and we’re all about ethics and doing business the right way. We do not need the Better Business Bureau accreditation to prove that. All you have to do is type Goldshot Exterminating into a Google search bar and you’ll find out who we are and what we stand for. We’re proud of our reputation – including our BBB accreditation – and encourage you to check it out via the link above. As long as they continue to offer a service that is beneficial to our customers we’ll continue to be a member.
