How Do I Get Rid Of Mosquitoes? | Goldshot Exterminating

How Do I
Get Rid Of Mosquitoes?

Mosquitoes & Mosquito Bites In ArizonaThe very first thing you need to be aware of as far as mosquito control is concerned is if there is any standing water around. If water is allowed to stand for a period of time, it will become stagnant and that’s exactly where most species of mosquitoes lay their eggs. Some times the source of standing, stagnant water may be off of your property – and out of your control. Mosquitoes don’t recognize nor respect property lines so if they’re allowed to breed and lay eggs anywhere close, you’ll have to deal with them.

Most species will go as far as three miles to find a meal. That meal, of course, will be you. So make sure there’s no standing, stagnant water for them to breed in, make sure your house is sealed up good and the doors and windows are closed, use yellow porch lights and look the other way if you have a couple of bats hanging around as they are the best mosquito control anywhere. Let your pest control technician know if you’re dealing with mosquitoes – he may be able to apply a repellent to areas of concern.

Mosquitoes aren’t the only flying pest that we deal with. If you’re dealing with a pigeon infestation or a bunch of bat guano let us know:)

How does scorpion sealing help with scorpion control? | Goldshot Exterminating

How does a home seal help with scorpion control?

Wanna Know How To Get Rid Of Scorpions? Call Goldshot Exterminating, you Scorpion Control Specialists Since 1991: 623-388-0303.

There are 43 known species of scorpions found in Maricopa County. Only one of these – the bark scorpion – is able to climb up a vertical surface. As a result, it is almost always the species that is found inside of homes and other structures. This species of Scorpion is most comfortable in dark, narrow spaces such as wall voids and crawl spaces. Every structure has gaps and crevices that allow access to the inside and to these void space areas of the building. So, how does scorpion sealing help with scorpion control? When a home seal is done correctly and with the correct products, most of these gaps and crevices are blocked or sealed off. That makes it much harder for scorpions to find their way into the structure.  Of course, this also applies to other critters such as spiders, crickets, etc.

A well done home seal by Goldshot Exterminating helps keep scorpions out, but it also helps keep cold air in. The result is lower energy costs which means that it will eventually pay for itself. It will also lower the amount of dust that gets in to the home. An added bonus is a reduction in pesticide use inside of the home as it pertains to your scorpion control program.

Do roaches really come up from the sewer? | Goldshot Exterminating

Do Roaches Really Come Up From The Sewer?

Pest Control Services Surprise AZYes – sometimes. The larger species of roaches such as the American, Oriental or Turkistanish Roaches are often referred to as sewer roaches. However, they are more likely to come from the outside. They like dark moist places such as the foundation of your home or a planter. They usually make their way inside under a door but can also come up through the sewer. All plumbing fixtures have a gooseneck in the pipe to hold water which blocks gases, fumes and bugs from coming up the empty pipes. One thing that a home owner can do to help is to run water down any drains that do not get used on a regular basis, keeping the gooseneck full. It’s a cheap, easy solution that will keep them from coming up if they are in the sewer lines. So next time you’re thinking ‘Do roached really come up from the sewer?’, turn all of your faucets on and count to 20. You’ll sleep better.

Are black widow spiders really dangerous? | Goldshot Exterminating

Are Black Widow Spiders Really Dangerous?

Female Black Widow Spider

Female Black Widow Spider

Yes – they absolutely are! Although the male and immature black widow spiders are harmless, the female is the most venomous spider in North America. Her venom is up to 15 times as toxic as some rattlesnakes! Once she reaches adulthood there’s no mistaking her for any other species of spider. Her body is jet black and her webbing is irregular and extremely sticky. And her egg sacks look like white, roundish little cocoons. But its the striking red hourglass on her almost perfectly round abdomen that really catches our attention. It’s a feature that it unique to female black widow spiders.

Their lifespan is 1 – 3 years and they thrive in the Phoenix AZ area. She secures her egg sacks with her sticky webbing, usually in dark, out of the way places. Each egg sack contains about 750 babies. They are distributed by the wind on their first strand of webbing. As a result, they can show up just about anywhere. A regular, thorough pest control service by one of Goldshot’s Licensed Pest Pros will keep them under control. The home owner should always teach their children not to touch the spiders or their webbing. I tell my customers to knock the old webs down with a stick a few days after treatment. If they come back we know there’s still at least one spider hiding in there. Of course, our team guarantees their work and go back for a respray when that happens. Any reputable pest control company will do the same for spiders, including the black widows.

Extra tip: immature black widow spiders are sometimes referred to as brown widows. They don’t turn black until their last molt into adulthood and are a cream or light brown until then. Though smaller when immature, they do still have the same basic shape and make the same sticky webs.

Here’s some additional resources about a few other arachnids that are present in the Phoenix area:

Brown Recluse

Tarantula

Bark Scorpion

Ticks

Does an occasional ant mean I have a problem? | Goldshot Exterminating

If I only see an occasional ant in my kitchen
do I have an ant problem?

Ants live in colonies with many – sometimes many thousands – of members. They send out ‘scouts’ to search for food and water sources in the area of the colony. Of course an ant’s diet is much broader than most of ours. For instance, ants will eat things like dead animals, trash and bird poop. Yum…..

If you see one or two ants on the kitchen or bathroom counter the best thing to do is to remove them. Don’t squash them as they will release a pheromone that may attract other ants. And don’t let them return home because they would leave a different sort of pheromone trail that would indicate where the food and/or water were found. Next thing you know that one or two ants becomes dozens and you have an ant problem.

If you do see scout ants tell your pest control technician. The placement of a gel bait that is labeled for that species of ant may be appropriate – even if you’re not seeing any more ants. And if you find them in the bottom of your bowl of cereal don’t stress too much. They’re high in protein:)

How do I get rid of Fruit Flies? | Goldshot Exterminating

How do I get rid of Fruit Flies?

Fruit Flies are a real pain in the butt. They buzz around in your face and like to fly up into your nose or ears. They want to eat your produce and drink your beer and/or wine. And they have the potential to contaminate your food with bacteria. What a wonderful addition to any home or workplace. Sounds like some in-laws:)

Here are a few tips on how to deal with a Fruit Fly problem:Fruit Fly Control

  • Let several bats cruise around your home. They love fruit flies.
  • A shotgun. And a good drywall repairman afterwards.
  • A regular, professional pest control service may help.
  • Store produce in air-tight containers.
  • Eat or dispose of produce before it gets over ripe.
  • Fruit Fly Traps. They catch them and help you monitor the problem.

The bottom line is that there’s nothing positive about having Fruit Flies around. Just get rid of them. Happy hunting!

Can scorpions climb into beds? | Goldshot Exterminating

Can Scorpions Climb
Into Our Beds?

Scorpions In My BedYes – at least the Arizona Bark Scorpion can. It’s the only one of the 40+ known species of scorpions in Arizona that can climb a vertical surface. There are a few things that you can do to make it less likely that you’ll be sleeping with a scorpion:

  • Obviously – if you have a scorpion problem, you should have a regular, on-going pest control service.
  • I really believe in a Home Seal or Scorpion Sealing by Goldshot Exterminating. If it’s done right – and we do it right –  I think it’s the best value in pest control and will make a definite difference as far as lowering the number of scorpions inside of your home goes.
  • Night light. If you can position lighting so that it keeps the floors lit it may help reduce the number of scorpions that move around close to your bed at night. They like it dark – don’t give it to them.
  • Shake out your bedding real good before getting into bed.
  • Make sure your blankets and sheets don’t touch the walls or floors. Scorpions will use them as a bridge to get to your bed.
  • You can put the legs of your bed (or a crib) in glass jars. As long as they are clean, scorpions cannot climb them.
  • If you have a serious scorpion problem or are allergic to scorpion or bee venom, you can prevent scorpions from falling off of the ceiling into your bed. You do this by taking a piece of foam board that’s bigger than your bed, attach double sided tape to the outer edges of one side and suspend it a few inches from the ceiling directly above the bed. If a scorpion falls onto it they will get stuck and not be able to fall onto the bed.

So, why do scorpions like beds? They probably wouldn’t if they knew we were going to be there, but they don’t. They’re just looking for a place to hide. Something tight and dark – like under the covers or pillows on our beds. Of course they’ll sting you if you lay down on them as a self defense mechanism, but they really don’t want any more to do with you than you do with them. Follow the tips above and you’ll both sleep better.

Sweet dreams and shake out that bedding! Or – better yet: Get a Free Scorpion Sealing Quote & save $50!!! with this contact form – just mention $50 off!
