What Is Digging Holes In My Yard?

Call Goldshot Exterminating for all of your Animal and Wildlife Control Services needs.

Rabbits and Kangaroo Rats will dig out shallow divots in the ground to lay in. It can be common along the foundation of your home or next to out buildings on your property. You can also find that under bushes sometimes. However, they don’t dig very deep or do much actual damage to the landscaping. When folks ask “what is digging holes in my yard?”, it’s usually pocket gophers. There are also ground squirrels and the occasional mole that can do damage here in the valley, too.

Regardless of which critter it is, they can all make a mess of your yard. They’ll kill your plants, ruin your lawn and can nibble into underground water lines. And their holes can undermine the integrity of the ground beneath your ground-mounted A/C units, cement sidewalks, etc. We recently got a call from a lady who raises horses. Her most valuable stud stepped into a gopher hole and broke his leg, ending his career. As with most critters, the longer rodents are allowed to do their thing, the more of them there will be. That usually means more rodent damages, as well. In general terms, rodent problems should be taken care of ASAP, whether it’s an inside problem or an outside one.

They’re Not Rodents But Bats Can Be A Problem. Here’s The 411:

Are coyotes aggressive or dangerous to humans? | Goldshot Exterminating

Are coyotes aggressive or dangerous to humans?

Are Coyotes Dangerous

Coyotes Pop Up Just About Everywhere

For the most part – no. There’s only been 2 recorded instances of a human being killed by coyotes. Almost all human injuries attributed to coyotes are the result of the animal being cornered or handled – neither of which is a good idea. Like most any species of wildlife, they will absolutely do what they have to do to defend themselves, including biting. Since they carry and transmit rabies via either a bite or even just a scratch, it’s best to just leave them alone. Rabies is a fast moving illness that will present itself like a flu at first. Then the infected person may start noticing other symptoms such as nervousness and anxiety, paralysis, shakes and tremors, excessive salivation and drooling along with other fun things. Anyone who suffers from a coyote bite should seek medical attention immediately if not sooner. Coyotes can also harbor these awesome things:

  • canine distemper
  • canine hepatitis
  • fleas
  • ticks
  • other parasites
  • tularemia

Coyotes do provide free rodent & critter control as they’ll eat just about anything with fur or feathers on it, so that can be good thing. They like fish, too, so if you have a coi pond they may do a bit of fishing at your place. Of course, they’ll also eat small pets and will take a free meal of any kind if available. They can climb block walls and are excellent hunters – really just the ultimate survivor. They live throughout the state of Arizona and can be found both out in the wild and right in the middle of cities like Surprise, Mesa, Glendale, Anthem, Phoenix, Chandler, Scottsdale, Peoria, etc.

The bottom line is, just stay away from coyotes, keep your small children (why take a chance?) and pets safe, and secure your trash and you’ll probably be good to go. Happy hunting!

Can a raccoon cause any real problems for me? | Goldshot Exterminating

Can a raccoon cause any real problems?

In some situations, a raccoon – like most Arizona wildlife – can be a cool and interesting neighbor/visitor. They are kinda cute (especially the babies) and the way they clean their food before eating it is pretty unique and fun to watch. As long as that’s all that they are doing on or near your property I’d say kick back and enjoy the show. Especially when they have little ones in tow.

However, raccoons can also be a real problem to homeowners sometimes, too. Their diets are pretty wide open and love almost any type of food they can get their hands on including whatever you throw away. They are very good with their hands (better than most rodents) and can get into things like trash cans, sheds, etc. easily if not tightly secured. Raccoons are famous for damaging anything (trash cans, landscaping, sheds, vehicles, etc.) to get to what they are after, which is usually something to eat. And they don’t clean up after themselves, either, so they mess can wear on you when it becomes a daily thing.

Raccoons are also known carriers of rabies and several other diseases so you don’t want to try to touch or handle them. They are quite strong and can be fierce so keeping your pets and children away from them is a must. Of course, one of the problems with raccoons – as well as with most all critters – is that they have babies. So before you know it you’re dealing with the mess, poop and possible threat from several raccoons instead of just one. The longer they are established in an area, the harder it is to get them to leave. So if you’re experiencing any of the above problems, the sooner you get rid of raccoons the better.

How do you get rid of nuisance raccoons? You can try lighting, noises, water hoses, predator urine and exclusion. Typically the homeowner ends up needing professional help in the form of a wildlife trapping and control specialist to trap and remove the raccoon(s). Make sure they are licensed and that they are practicing humane animal control techniques before you hire them. And once the raccoon(s) are gone, make sure to take care of the environmental conditions that invited them in the first place so you don’t have to go through this again with the next critter that comes along.

Helping To control The Fish Population In Arizona | Goldshot Exterminating

Helping To Control The Fish Population In Arizona:)

Do you like to fish? I certainly do and I take my responsibility to help control the fish population here in Arizona pretty darn seriously, too:) When I was younger, I spent many hours at Lake Pleasant bottom fishing for catfish and pulled some nice fats ones out – often using chicken livers on a treble hook,  stuffed into a piece of nylon hose as bait. I also pulled out plenty of white bass, largemouth bass and a few bluegills, as well. It was always fun to just start a little fire right there on the shore and cook em up with butter, salt and cornmeal.

As I started to get a little older I enjoyed the heat less and less and started gravitating to the mountains of northern and eastern Arizona for all of my camping, hiking, wildlife watching and fishing adventures. I’ve absolutely fallen in love with trout fishing and have climbed mountains, hiked many miles, fought a colony of Mexican Free-Tailed Bats, ran from a bear and slept out in the open air – even on a small paddle boat once – to get to the best fishing holes. There’s just nothing like standing in a mountain stream in the pine trees floating a worm down stream or working a rooster tail across a pool. The weather is awesome and the fish are, too. One of my favorites is the Apache Trout which is native to the White Mountains of eastern Arizona. They are absolutely beautiful – a rich olive green body with a sparkly, golden under belly. I love the way they glisten in the sunlight on the end of my line. The Black River in eastern Arizona is where I usually catch them tho they are also found in Becker Lake in Springerville and other White Mountain lakes and streams.

Arctic Grayling

Arctic Grayling

Another cool catch is the trout’s cousin, the Arctic Graying. They’re stocked in Lee Valley Reservoir, east of Show Low – not too far from Big Lake. Basically you fish them the same as you do a brook, brown or rainbow trout, tho they seem to be a bit harder to catch in my experience. They put up a good fight and their large, sail-like dorsal fin and narrow waist sets them apart from the other species of fish in the area. They are also a striking lavender/purple color during certain times of the year, which is really unique. The fishing rules at Lee Valley Reservoir are a little tight, but it’s an absolutely beautiful place to hang out for the day and catching one of these beauties would be the icing on the cake. There’s plenty of hiking and camping opportunities in the area as well as a good chance to see some elk, so I highly recommend a visit.

All in all, we really have a great selection of fish throughout the state of Arizona, including:

Apache Trout
Artic Grayling
Brook Trout
Brown Trout
Channel Catfish
Crappie
Cutthroat Trout
Flathead Catfish
Largemouth Bass
Rainbow Trout
Smallmouth Bass
Striped Bass
Yellow Bass

What a great way to spend a day – or a week – with the folks you love. Camping, hiking, wildlife viewing and fishing is a fantastic bonding experience and can create memories that your children and grandchildren can hang on to for life. I’ll never forget the time my son John Jr. pulled a 16″ Brown Trout out of Becker Lake in Springerville AZ when he was just a little dude. He was so excited and so were his mom and I. Or the time my daughter Mandy touched her first trout at Black River. She squealed like a little piggy and we all died laughing. I remember when my mother-in-law Sheila had a nice sized rainbow trout on her line – also at the Black River. It got off the hook and she literally ran out into the water and caught it with her bare hands! Her butt in the air and a huge smile on her face. You just can’t make this stuff up. Kim and I now live just a few miles from where all of that happened and, tho the kids are grown and living their own lives (we miss them terribly), still hope to do a lot of fishing and make a lot of new memories in the future.

So, why am I writing an article about fishing on the Goldshot Exterminating pest & pigeon control company website? Because it’s fun – that’s why. Because fishing is one of the really good slices of life. I love to fish and just wanted to share a little bit of the info that I’ve gathered through the years about fishing with my customers. Hope to see you at the stream with a big one on your line soon:) Happy Fishing!

Watching The Wildlife In Arizona | Goldshot Exterminating

Watching The Wildlife In Arizona

Wildlife Watching In AZFolks love to watch the wildlife here in Arizona. It’s one of my favorite things to do, too, so I get it. And we’re blessed to live in a state that has such a diverse wildlife population. Whether you’re watching wildlife in the desert or up in Arizona’s high country, there’s plenty of different critters to track. Here’s just a small sampling of who you may run across if you get out away from town (and sometimes even in town!):

  • Arizona Badger
  • Bats
  • Bald Eagle
  • Bark Scorpions
  • Bear
  • Big-eared Bat
  • Bighorn Sheep
  • Bobcat
  • California Condor
  • Chiricahua Leopard Frog
  • Chuckwalla Lizard
  • Coral Snakes
  • Coyotes
  • Desert Tortoise
  • Fish – lot’s of different species
  • Gambel’s Quail
  • Gila Monster
  • Golden Eagle
  • Horned Toad
  • Jackrabbits
  • Jaguar
  • Javalina
  • Kit Fox
  • Mallard Ducks
  • Merriam’s Turkey
  • Mexican Free-Tailed Bats
  • Mountain Lion
  • Mule Deer
  • Prairie Dog
  • Porcupine
  • Pronghorn Antelope
  • Raccoons
  • Rattlesnake
  • Ringtail Cat
  • Roadrunner
  • Rocky Mountain Elk
  • Rodents
  • Sandhill Cranes
  • Skunks
  • Squirrels
  • Tarantulas
  • Western Banded Gecko
  • White Tailed Sheep

You can check some of these critters along with many others by visiting the state’s zoos and animal parks:

The cool thing about going to the zoos is that you can often get a lot closer to and learn more about these animals, which is cool. But there’s nothing quite like coming across actual wildlife living in their natural state either in Arizona’s vast desert areas or in the beautiful pine trees of the northern or eastern areas of the state. The key is to respect these animals and leave them as you found them. Virtually all animal bites occur when folks get too close to the animals or decide to handle or catch them. They obviously don’t understand and will feel threatened, so they’ll bite you, scratch you and do just about anything else they can to get away. The best way to watch wildlife is to keep a safe distance – far enough away so that the animal doesn’t feel threatened – and just watch them do what they do. A number of these creatures have dangerous and/or venomous bites and some, like the Rocky Mountain Elk, are much larger and stronger than humans and can really hurt you if you do get too close. Think about it this way: how would you feel if a skunk walked into your house and tried to catch you or started poking at you with a stick? You’d probably be a bit ticked off, right?

When spending time out in the wilderness, where there are virtually no people, your odds of seeing animals in their natural state get better. However, so does the odds of you having a problem, too. Depending on where you go, bears, rattlesnakes, corral snakes and mountain lions can pose a real danger. Luckily rattlesnakes will usually let you know when you’re getting too close, coral snakes have some bright, colored markings that may help you see them quicker and the bears and mountain lions really don’t want anything to do with you. So just be aware of what’s going on around you and be prepared. There are many resources out there where you can learn how to be safer in the wilderness and I recommend taking the time to explore them so you can really enjoy the wilderness and watching the wildlife in Arizona. And don’t poke at the bear!

I hope this article lends a few thoughts and resources that will help you and your family enjoy Arizona’s wildlife. As always: Happy Hunting!

It’s Rodent Season. Are You Ready? | Goldshot Exterminating

It’s Rodent Season. Are You Ready?

Rodent Control Glendale AZ

Although mice, rats, gophers and squirrels are active all year in the Metro Phoenix area, the probability of rodent/human interaction goes up significantly in the fall and winter each year. Why do there seem to be more mice and rats in the fall and winter? Because it’s getting cooler at night so mice and rats are looking for a warm, safe spot to set up shop for the winter. And your attic is pretty tempting.

Think about it: an attic is much warmer than the outside environment and it comes fully furnished with lots of soft, warm insulation for the whole family. There’s protection from predators and a virtual smorgasbord of food and water available downstairs every night – as soon as those inconvenient humans go to sleep. What’s not to like? You may hear scratching in the attic or walls. Or some folks describe it as a ‘track meet’ in the attic. Of course with mice and rats, there’s always the possibility of finding their droppings just about anywhere. Their population can grow fairly quickly and, if left undisturbed, can develop into a legitimate critter problem in no time at all.

So what’s a body to do? Be vigilant. Look for evidence of a problem. Check often in places like the garage (especially behind and under stuff), under the sinks and in the pantry for droppings, urine or ‘rub marks’ which are caused when a rodent frequents an area on a regular basis. Rodents don’t poop like pigeons (nothing does!), but they poop a lot and often.Often the 1st sign is finding something that’s been chewed up, such as a bag of dog food or bird seed. And then there’s those odd noises that seem to be coming from the walls or attic. Don’t blow them off – it could be a visitor chewing on the electric wiring in your home.

If you find any evidence of a rodent infestation you need to take action immediately. Make sure trees do not hang over the home or touch it in any way. Good old fashioned snap traps baited with peanut butter is almost always effective – if used the correct way. There are also baits available over the counter. They should be used with caution and always within the instructions and specifications found on the label. I highly recommend exclusion work specifically for rodents such as screening off all of the exhaust and plumbing vents on the roof. Unless you’re experienced in that area, a professional exterminator who knows what they’re doing may be the way to go. Get a referral from a friend or family member and always check them out online: the Better Business Bureau and online reviews can tell you a lot about how they conduct business.

I hope this article raises your awareness and helps you to prevent a potential rodent problem from getting out of control. If you need a professional exterminator and you’re located in the Phoenix area I hope you’ll consider the Goldshot Exterminating team of AZDA Licensed & Pre-Screened Rodent Control Pros as your rodent control solution. Happy hunting!

Rodent Control And Exclusion Services Done Right

Mouse Control:

The most common mouse problems we deal with in the Phoenix AZ area are house mice and field mice. In general, mice have poor eye sight and rely heavily on their keen sense of hearing and smell to survive. Although they are accomplished explorers, they rarely go farther than 50 feet from their nest. Most mice give birth to an average of 6 – 8 pups per litter and can have 5 – 10 litters per year so the population can explode quickly. If you find mouse droppings in or around your home or business, you need to get a control program going right away. Why? Well, 6 pups x 5 liters = 30 mice in a year. And it can be worse than that.

Rat Control:

Though there are several species of rats in Arizona, the pack rat and roof rat tend to be the more frequent pest control problems here in the Phoenix area. Depending on the species and their living conditions, rats can have between 10 and 20 litters of 8 – 12 pups per year – that’s ridiculous! Although each species has it’s own unique behavioral traits, most rats will travel as far as 300 feet from their nest for food. Of course, like mice, pack rats and roof rats love to set up shop in our attics and crawl spaces. The math for rats is worse than the math for mice. One pair can produce 80 rats in a year!

Gopher Control:

The Botta’s Pocket Gopher or ‘Valley Gopher” is a huge pest control problem here in the valley. They can live 1 – 3 years, give birth to 1 – 8 pups per litter and can have 1 or more litters per year. They live in tunnels that can sometimes be up to 150 yards in length and have been known to move up to a ton of soil per year, so one gopher can be responsible for a lot of damage to a large geographical area. They are strictly vegetarian with a diet consisting of whatever plants are a available, which includes almost everything in your yard. How many tons of soil can be dug up and moved around in your yard before it ticks you off?

Squirrel Control:

The Rock Squirrel poses a big pest control problem here in the southwest. They have 1 or 2 litters of 3 – 9 pups per year and can live up to 2 years in the wild. Once they set up shop in a location they become a permanent fixture and, over the years, can ruin your landscaping. Much like a pocket gopher, the rock squirrel can eat many of the plants in your yard, nibble into water lines and undermine the integrity of the soil under ground-mounted A/C units, sheds and other fixtures in their territory.

Rodent control is an important part of what any reputable reputable pest control company does. Everybody wants to build a better mouse trap, but at the end of the day having experience, an eye for detail and an ability to think like these critters are an absolute must for any successful rodent control specialist. That’s where Goldshot Exterminating’s group of Licensed and Pre-Screened Pest Pros comes in. They can handle ANY rodent problem and have effective solutions for your mouse control, rat control, gopher control & squirrel control needs that include evicting your unwanted guests and helping to prevent their return when possible. There’s even a bio-cleaner product that can be used to neutralize the bacteria in rodent feces and urine.

It all adds up to a safer, cleaner and healthier environment for you, your family and/or co-workers. You don’t have to live with a rodent problem! Call Goldshot today for a FREE rodent control quote!
